Week Two: Assignment 2

Chai Tea Sunday by Heather A. Clark
After a sudden tragedy leads to the end of her marriage, Nikki Fowler travels to Kenya to volunteer at an orphanage and embarks on a journey of self- discovery in attempting to save the lives of the impoverished children in her care. This book is for the reader who is looking for a novel that will evoke strong emotion and instill valuable life lessons.  The reader’s values and perspectives are challenged along with Nikki’s as she confronts a hostile world.  If you like strong, well -developed characters grappling with physical and emotional strife against an unfamiliar landscape, you will love this novel.

No Right Turn by Terry Trueman
13 year old Jordan discovers his father has shot himself and is unable to revive him after attempting CPR.  Depressed, guilt ridden and withdrawn, he finds his only solace in stealing joy rides in his mother’s boyfriend’s Corvette.  No Right Turn is an action packed, fast paced thrill ride that is perfect for reluctant teen boy readers who will identify with Jordan’s impulsiveness and conflicted emotions as he makes reckless decisions to escape his pain. The tension and suspense is carried along by dynamic dialogue making for a good read aloud story.  For teens drawn in by dark themes in fiction, No Right Turn is a believable account of the devastating impact of suicide on those left behind with enough twists and turns to maintain interest.

  1. Hi Brenda!
I really loved your annotations and I'm planning to read both of these books. A book that sounds similar to "Chai Tea Sunday" is one called "A Simple Thing" by Kathleen McCleary. Also, "The Fault in Our Stars" by John Green might also be a book you would enjoy because, like "No Right Turn," it is about teens struggling with very difficult issues.
